End Screen Time Battles Forever

TapOut helps parents motivate teens to reduce screen time by tying their allowance to phone-free goals. Set weekly targets together, hit them, get paid automatically. Transform family conflict into cooperation.

How it works

Set weekly goals together

Every week, parents and teens meet for 5 minutes to set TapOut goals together. Decide how much Sleep, Focus, and Social time feels right, and what the weekly allowance reward should be. TapOut comes with smart defaults to get you started, but you can customize everything to fit your family.

Automatically earn every day

Throughout the week, teens tap their NFC tag when it's time to disconnect—for sleep, homework, dinner, driving, or family time. One tap blocks social media, gaming, and video apps. Every completed session automatically adds to their allowance. Daily progress = daily earnings.

Family cooperation replaces conflict

At the end of the week, teens cash out everything they've earned. Then you meet again, reflect on what worked, adjust goals if needed, and set up the next week. No daily arguments—just a simple rhythm of goals, freedom, and rewards.

Finally, a screen time solution that works WITH your teen's psychology

The problem with traditional screen time apps?
They fight against teen biology. TapOut works with it - making putting the phone down more rewarding than picking it up.

4 Science-Backed Insights Every Parent Should Know

1. Teen brains are wired for rewards (and apps exploit this)
Adolescent brains (ages 10-25) have heightened reward sensitivity. Social media and gaming apps hijack this natural drive with infinite scroll and dopamine hits. Fighting this biology with restrictions alone is a losing battle.

2. Punishment creates rebellion, incentives create cooperation
Research shows that negative consequences (taking phones away, screen time locks) trigger defiance in teens. But positive reinforcement for desired behaviors? That reduces conflict and builds intrinsic motivation.

3. Autonomy is critical for teen development
Teens need to feel in control of their choices to develop self-regulation. Top-down restrictions may work short-term, but they don't teach the critical skill: self-management. TapOut puts teens in the driver's seat with collaborative goal-setting.

4. The real goal isn't avoidance—it's building healthy habits
Jonathan Haidt's The Anxious Generation recommends delaying smartphones until 16. But what happens after? Most teens will have social media eventually. The critical skill isn't avoidance—it's training them to take meaningful breaks during their formative years, so they don't become addicted as young adults.

TapOut Rewards is scheduled to release in mid November.

How do I know my teen is not cheating on TapOut?

TapOut tracks all activity during sessions and flags any changes to Screen Time settings. The Activity Report provides full transparency on what happened. No successful session = no reward. The system creates natural accountability, so you don't have to be the enforcer.

Are there minimums to earn rewards?

Yes. TapOut Rewards comes pre-configured requiring teens to TapOut for sleep and 1 Focus or Social session per day. Rewards are earned daily when they meet these requirements.

Can I change the amounts or times?

Yes. Everything in TapOut Rewards is configurable. We can set different earning amounts and session requirements.
